What’s it like to be a Manomet scientist?

This spring, we begin with our annual visit to the historic Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, where we’ll be searching for migrant songbirds and learning more about Manomet’s landbird conservation work. Last year, we spotted more than three dozen different species, including a stunning Scarlet Tanager, so we’re excited about what we’ll see this year!

A few days later on World Migratory Bird Day, we’ll spend an afternoon touring beaches around Delaware Bay in search of shorebirds and horseshoe crabs. It’s the start of the “May on the Bay” season as upwards of 500,000 shorebirds stop to rest and refuel during their migration back to the Arctic, and members will get an up-close look at the important conservation work being done in this area.

In late May, members can join us for a fun, refreshing hike on Cape Cod. This area is part of an important ecoregion known as the Atlantic Coastal Pine Barrens, and members will learn more about how Manomet is using a green infrastructure analysis to improve planning and management of this region.

We’ll wrap up the spring 2019 “In the Field” series on beautiful Georgetown Island in Maine. Members will get to visit our green crab sorting and storage facility, sample a green crab dish prepared by a local chef, and walk the flats at the Heal Eddy Clam Farm. It will be a great opportunity to see firsthand how Manomet is working to create healthy and resilient fisheries in the Gulf of Maine.
