Summer 2020 Census, Week 11: June 22—26

ALAN: WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24—CENSUS

The bird community at Manomet is always going through subtle changes, and mid-June is no different. One rather predictable change has started to occur, and I noticed it today. The flock of American Golfinches on the farm has begun to form. While most other birds are in the midst of breeding, goldfinches are congregating in areas with lots of seeds, and won’t start breeding until a bit later in summer, once their preferred food source is in peak abundance. Other highlights for me included a second visit back out to the farm, where I patiently stood amid the flowering meadow to photograph the visiting insects. I sorted through the skippers and coppers, and stared longingly at the dragonflies flying too far overhead. I slipped down into the pit, where I was again enjoyed the company of several bullfrogs of various sizes. While on the net lanes, I spotted an Ebony Jewelwing damselfly, a new species for Manomet, only to learn that Evan too had spotted one just a few days before. I also added a soaring Broad-winged Hawk, a first for the year on the property.
