December 2 – 3, 2015 Manomet’s Habitat Management Team held a shorebird conservation workshop in support of the Habitats for Shorebirds Project. The workshop was hosted in collaboration with colleagues from El Instituto deCiencias del Mar y Limnología Unidad Académica Mazatlán (the Institute of Marine Sciences and Limnology, National Autonomous University of Mexico) and the Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior deEnsenada (Ensenada Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education).

This two-day workshop focused on the impacts of human disturbance, a major threat to shorebirds in the region, and methods to mitigate their effects on migratory and nesting shorebird populations. Workshop participants in attendance represented protected areas in Sonora and Sinaloa, Mexico including representatives from the Alto Golfo de California y Delta del Rio Colorado and Playa Ceuta, both WHSRN/RHAP sites. The workshop included a combination of classroom and field components as well as in-depth discussions about specific issues of disturbance at the sites participants manage.

These workshops are integral to the goal of the Habitats for Shorebirds Project which is to work with stakeholders to ensure continued provision of shorebird habitat, to improve the quality and availability of resources that support shorebirds in important regions throughout the Western Hemisphere, and to foster collaboration among land managers.
