Our first week of fall banding is complete! We spent the majority of the week setting up nets and fighting back the vigorous summer growth of shrubs and vines as they threatened to overtake the net lanes. During our first week, we banded 133 new birds and captured 17 repeats of already banded birds. The majority of our captures were young Gray Catbirds that hatched this summer, during our three days of banding we caught 114! We started the season by banding birds of 11 species including American Redstart and Northern Waterthrush. We caught several species of bird that breed on Manomet’s property like a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird and Northern Cardinal and also caught species that breed nearby like the Ovenbird. An exciting early morning catch for us was a Yellow-breasted Chat, these birds breed to our south, around New Jersey, and we catch this species occasionally as it disperses north.
