The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently awarded non-profit Manomet an $80,000 grant to support a project that promotes energy efficiency and reduced use of hazardous materials among New York and New Jersey grocery stores and dairy farms.
Manomet, based in Massachusetts, is an environmental organization that works to conserve natural resources using a science-based approach developed through research and collaboration. In New Jersey, the non-profit will be working with the Wakefern Food Coporation, which operates ShopRite grocery stores, and potentially five dairy farms. Manomet will provide on-site technical assistance and train staff on measures to conserve energy and reduce the use and generation of hazardous materials, an important consideration to limit the potential effects of severe storms. The training will highlight methods developed specifically for each business.
“Pollution prevention is some of the most important work being done to protect the environment,” EPA Regional Administrator Judith A. Enck said. “This project will help business owners reduce their use of chemicals and conserve energy. By taking steps to reduce waste at the source, businesses can improve the environment and their bottom line at the same time.”
The $80,000 is part of $5 million in grants provided by the EPA for pollution prevention.
