Another successful Bird-A-Thon has come and gone! Thank you so much to all of you who participated in another fabulous weekend of community birding. For 46 years, Manomet’s Bird-a-thon has been critical in raising awareness of and support for our migratory landbird research and we were thrilled to have had such an excellent turnout at Manomet Headquarters.
The figurative dust has settled and checklists have been tallied to comprise some impressive numbers: to date, we received 103 checklists from 45 unique observers. Bird-A-Thon participants saw 265 species across 9 States and four countries. Our most numerous bird was Canada Goose – a whopping 3642 CANG were tallied.
Observers also added 11 novel species to the BAT list going back to 2018, including: King Rail, Suiriri Flycatcher and Eurasian Crag Martin. At Manomet Headquarters, we welcomed over 50 visitors who helped spot birds from our bluff (the Big Sit list topped out at 50 species this year), as well as enjoying family-friendly activities in the garden and banding lab. The smallest of our birdwatchers enjoyed story time on the bluff and pumpkin painting, and all ages seemed to appreciate the camaraderie and feeling of community – not to mention the homemade pancakes, breakfast treats (provided by nearby Clement’s Market), and cider!
