The Manomet Banders

Myrtle Warbler

This week we banded 81 new birds and processed an additional 50 recaptures. This brings our season totals up to 838 new birds banded and 649 recaptures processed. We caught three new species this week, including Northern Mockingbird and Orange-crowned Warbler bringing our season total up to 66 species. We continued to catch several species that are approaching the tail end of their migration window, including several Myrtle Warblers, Red-eyed Vireos, Black-throated Blue Warblers, and a Nashville Warbler.

A huge American Toad was spotted by the banders under the patio of the new building. Upon closer inspection, this toad puffed itself up, trying to look even bigger. As the winter approaches, American Toads will dig themselves into the ground to hibernate for the winter, backing into the hole they dig with their back feet. On Tuesday we caught the Northern Mockingbird in one of the bluff nets — an uncommon capture for us since our nets aren’t set up in any habitat that they frequent. This could be one of the several mockingbirds that frequent the hedges of the farm or a different bird from down the road that began to wander. We’ll be interested to see if we can spot any bands on the group of mockingbirds on the farm.
