Join us on Monday, February 24, for a special winter bird walk at Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Rhode Island.

 

Sachuset Point is one of the few places in Rhode Island where the hot birding comes during the colder months. Winter specialties include Harlequin Ducks, scoters, loons, Purple Sandpipers and perhaps even a Short-eared or Snowy Owl.

 

The walk will be led by Brad Winn, a conservation specialist for Manomet’s Shorebird Recovery Project. Winn conducts workshops on shorebird habitat conservation for state and federal land managers and biologists, has participated in nine research expeditions to Arctic shorebird breeding areas in Alaska and eastern Canada and collaborates with several partners on a long-term Whimbrel tracking project.

 

“The winter is a great time of year to get out and go birding along the New England coast,” Winn said. “It’s possible to see a surprising diversity of winter birds, including a variety of landbird, shorebird and seabird species.”

 

Winn also hosts an annual series of shorebird identification workshops for the public.  

 

The Sachuest Point walk will meet at the refuge parking lot at 1 pm before heading to the coastline to search for waterfowl and other winter residents of the rocky seashore and scrubby coastal habitats.

 

This special trip is limited to the first 20 participants, and the cost is $25 for Manomet members and $40 for non-members.
