Overview

Manomet is committed to open science.

As evidence of changes in the Earth’s climate, its ecosystems, and biodiversity grows, the need for a concerted, collective response from scientists, natural resource managers, policy-makers, and society as a whole is clearer than ever before. Sharing research methods, data, and findings that inform inclusive practices more broadly improves the scientific process, increases science accessibility, and stimulates open debate over conservation and sustainable resource management best practices. Manomet has a long history of producing and sharing data and engaging the public in the scientific process. However, advances in online tools and technologies for collaborative research allow us to go further. Manomet is committed to open, accessible science and is currently developing the technical capacity to support this commitment.

Reducing Barriers to Entry

We wish to make our work public in support of organizations, individuals, and groups that face financial barriers to engaging with science, including accessing information. We are also committed to helping reduce barriers for BIPOC students to enter science fields. We are expanding the diversity of our student base in our education programming. We will be launching a banding camp specifically for BIPOC students in 2022 to learn and practice the research methodologies and techniques needed to work in a bird banding laboratory.

What we are doing

We are expanding our existing online document library to include reports, management guidance, and peer-reviewed journal articles, where Manomet researchers hold copyrights.
Future work that we conduct will be developed, from the very beginning, to maximize the amount of data, research methods, and results that can be shared online.
We are committed to publishing in open access journals or to cover the charges to make our research open access wherever possible. Our objective in expanding our information sharing is to allow everyone to view our work and build on it to open up future collaborative opportunities.
