Shorebird Biologist, Cape Cod
Join The Small Sit, Manomet’s bite-sized virtual science series, each month as we learn about the wonders of why birds migrate, the importance of river herring in coastal food webs, and so much more!
Join us on Wednesday February 26 for an educational episode of our Small Sit series as we learn the fascinating details of a Cape Cod Whimbrel’s journey, hosted by Shorebird Biologist Liana DiNunzio. Like many shorebird species, Whimbrel undergo amazing migrations. Unfortunately, another thing they have in common with other shorebirds is that their populations are in decline. Manomet and our partners have been studying Whimbrel migration to better understand the causes of their declines, and where to focus conservation actions. Advancements in wildlife tracking technology have allowed us to accurately track Whimbrel migration and identify key sites they use during the breeding, migration, and non-breeding seasons. Most of these tracking studies have focused on adult birds, so little is known about their first years of life. In 2015, Manomet initiated a tracking study focused on juvenile Whimbrel. Using satellite transmitters, we have been following these young birds from their staging grounds on Cape Cod, through their first migrations south to their non-breeding grounds.
During this webinar, Shorebird Biologist, Liana DiNunzio, will share what we’ve learned about juvenile Whimbrel over the past 10 years and how we are scaling up our efforts to learn more about these young birds’ journeys and survival. She will also share some highlights from our most recent Whimbrel tracking efforts that began in 2024. Don’t miss this chance to connect with a community of fellow bird lovers and learn more about the vital role we all play in protecting our natural world. Mark your calendars and prepare to be inspired!
